Introduction
I carried out an interview for star wars battlefronts about the games deconstruction to help collect some responses from the games audience. In this task I am going to include the script for the video including the questions I asked throughout the interview as well as a report with information about the audience feedback using elucidated examples.
Script
In this video I am going to be recoding a genuine discussion about the game genre, content and code and conventions in the video game star wars battle front. My main aim is to measure the audience feedback and analyse the information gathered so I can produce a report explaining how the video game addresses the audience. Here is the response I got;
Q1: The first question is what game genre would you say star wars battlefront is and why?
Q2: The second Question I am going to be asking is about the code and conventions. Video games include a complex of code and conventions. In my previous task I have already explained all the code and conventions which are included in the video game star wars battle front. In this question I will be asking the star wars battlefront audience for their response on what they think the code and conventions are for this game.
Q3: What code and conventions are typically in a FPS?
Q4: What about code and conventions in a typical Sci-Fi genre?
Q5: Which of these code and conventions have you noticed in star wars: battlefront?
Q6: I want you to think about the selection of content and how it is constructed to help address the audience. For instance the content in star wars battlefront is constructed in a certain way so it can address its wide range of audience. For example, battlefront has attracted the usual players who play action and FPS as well as an audience with different ages and the typical audience who watch the star wars movies. To address an audience this big, the game content had to be constructed in an effective way.
Can you explain the different contents in the game including the contents appearance and how it is constructed?
Q7: How do you think the selection and construction of the games content can change the way the game is addressing the audience?
Q8: Language is a big part on how the audience is addressed for instance the audience can be addressed as if they are in first person, or in a formal or informal tone. Can you try and explain what sort of tone and modes of address the game uses to address the player?
The Interview/Discussion
I used face to face interview for my method to collect the audience response because I personally think it is one of the most effective methods to help collect the information needed. For instance face to face interviews allows me to see the individual who is being interview, I get to see their gender, age, race and body language which is impossible to see whilst doing online questions as a method. I personally think this gives a more accurate response because anyone can be filling in a survey and lie without anyone knowing but with a face-to-face interview they cannot lie about their age or gender because you can see their gender and age. I personally think questionnaires can sometimes be inaccurate and misleading resulting in a feedback which is incorrect. Here is the response I got;
Audience Response
In this selection I am going to do a quick over view of the audience responses to my questions about the game's deconstruction.
Q1: What game genre would you say star wars battlefront is and why?
The game genres for star wars battle front are action because it’s a shooting game and is Sci-Fi because it’s set in space.
Q2: What code and conventions are typically in a FPS?
In a first person shooter you usually get to see more, there’s a lot in the game and the player is usually like a soldier. There is a bit of gore but it isn’t to gory because its child friendly like it’s still a bit gory because you see them and hear them dying. First person shooters have adapted by using VR and you expect a hero persona, gore and a more user friendly.
Q4: What about code and conventions in a typical Sci-Fi genre?
In a sci-fi genre you expect to see new high tech spaceships, alien weapons, aliens, strange planets and different species of humanoids.
Q5: Which of these code and conventions have you noticed in star wars: battlefront?
Star wars have a lot of the stuff we just mentioned its spacey, has different planets, futuristic guns, light sabers, small element of guns and gore but there isn’t no heads blowing off and no blood or anything like that, it is easy to use.
Q6: Can you explain the different contents in the game including the contents appearance and how it is constructed?
There is a lot in the game like tie fighters, laser cannons, light sabers, walkers, Rebels and different types of blasters.
The clothing on the Jedi's isn’t what you expect people to wear in 2016 this gives it more of a fantasy feel. The sound in the game balances out the game by making you feel like you are in the space ship and you are in the actual game.
There are different missions like there is different types survival you, ones where you and your mate hold up their also co-op missions and fighting against each other. You can play the game in split screen so you can play it with your friends if you haven’t got the game console. Unlike in zombies, there is no penalty for dying or any re-spawn timer instead its straight back in to the battle which is more realistic. There isn’t any ammo because there’s a re-boost on the weapons.
Q7: How do you think the selection and construction of the games content can change the way the game is addressing the audience?
I think it is constructed to be more of a casual game because there is no penalty for death or gore so it’s like it’s aimed at younger players. This is bad though because I understand why star wars wanted to attract a new generation to play star wars and watch star wars but I feel like the game didn’t hit the older generation and didn’t satisfy the older generation who watched star wars. I don’t think the game addresses hard core players because it’s aiming more for the hardcore fans of star wars because there isn’t much to unlock and there is no story line. I used to watch the films as a kid, my dad brought me up to think star wars was the one. When I play this game I don’t feel like this game is amazing, you feel like you are a part of star wars and apart of what you wanted to do when you were a kid watching the star wars movies.
Q8: Can you try and explain what sort of tone and modes of address the game uses to address the player?
The game talks to you in a formal way, it almost just gives you order and directions like 'officer we need help', enemies are attacking this and enemy’s attack that' or 'this place has been overrun' or even if a Jedi comes on the screen it alerts you. But it is all in little commands. It is in a formal way but it is weird because it’s stern and soft. You can tell it’s giving you an order but again it is being used in a friendly way almost like it is aiming at little kids. Sometimes you even hear a female and when you thinking of shooting games you think of military and a Sergeant screaming down the microphone but instead it’s more calm and collected. For example it’s like being shouted at by your dad but then your brother or someone comes up to you and tells you what to do in a nicer way, it’s more chilling than being shouting at.
The character emotes are funny emotes like trying to torn the enemy’s or say if you kill an enemy it’s like a funny tornt. I guess there is other stuff but they are just mainly commands.
I am going to be explaining the audience response more in the conclusion (HA9 Task 3) when I am comparing the Deconstruction and the audience response.
